FSRT Perspectives

FSRT Perspectives logo representing Functional Systems Regulation Theory as a lens for exploring human experience, regulation, relationships, and the Living Field.

FSRT Perspectives is a companion series to Psycholytic Perspectives, examining the questions raised in those original essays specifically through the framework of Functional Systems Regulation Theory (FSRT).

Psycholytic Perspectives, written by Alan Romano, LCSW and published through Psycholytic Services, explores psychology, psychiatry, psychedelics, human distress, consciousness, and culture through clinical observation, research, history, and systems-based inquiry. FSRT Perspectives extends that conversation. Rather than reproducing the original essays, each reflection brings their central questions into the conceptual architecture of Functional Systems Regulation Theory.

Through FSRT concepts including the Living Field, Homeostatic Patterning, Regulatory Burden, the Delusion of Comfort, capacity, Sacred Distress, and Integration as Reorganization, these companion pieces examine what symptoms and patterns may be responding to, how protective strategies become organized over time, and what conditions may allow a living system to reorganize.

The relationship between the two series is intentional. Psycholytic Perspectives opens the inquiry; FSRT Perspectives examines that inquiry through the developing language and principles of Functional Systems Regulation Theory. Together, they offer two connected ways of exploring human suffering, adaptation, regulation, and healing without reducing the person to symptoms in isolation.

A Nation Regulating Its Pain

Opioids and the American Delusion of Comfort

How did a nation with extraordinary access to medicine become so dependent on relief from pain? Article 01 examines the opioid crisis beyond addiction and prescribing, asking what our relationship with pain reveals about the culture in which it developed. Through the lens of FSRT, it introduces the Delusion of Comfort and asks what happens when escaping suffering becomes more important than understanding it.

FSRT PERSPECTIVES | ARTICLE 02

A Nation Afraid to Feel

Anxiety and the Illusion of Safety

What if anxiety is not always something we should immediately try to eliminate? Article 02 explores anxiety as both a source of real suffering and a necessary part of human regulation. Through the lens of FSRT, it examines our pursuit of safety, the pressure to appear okay, and what anxiety may reveal about the lives we have learned to live.

FSRT PERSPECTIVES | ARTICLE 03

A Nation Medicating Its Depression

Antidepressants, Placebo, and What We May Be Missing About Human Distress

What if depression is not always evidence that something inside us is broken? Article 03 explores antidepressants, placebo, and what treatment response can and cannot tell us about the origins of human distress. Through the lens of FSRT, it examines depression within the larger context of a person’s life and asks what we may miss when relief from symptoms becomes the primary measure of healing.
